Here are two amazing videos by German artist Henning Strassburger, “Die Neue Härte” (above) and “Hulahula.” A snippet of translated lyrics from Hulahula might be unnecessary, but just to get the point across:

Oh man i will now go party/

I will see some wonderful people/

This could not get better/

I say now it’s party time

I don’t want to sully these videos with an introduction, but here is a bit of cultural background. “Schlager” music has been around since the 50s, and is still, incomprehensibly, incredibly popular in Germany, as evidenced by the television show Musikantenstadl that is still broadcast countrywide on primetime every Saturday night. Schlager songs are mostly sentimental, nostalgic ballads. Here’s a Strassburger-relevant example: Aloha Oe. I’d encourage you to get a bit deeper into Schlager (and Strassburger) if you’re into conversations about sincerity vs. new sincerity.

Strassburger is also an incredible painter. Seriously. My favorite of his paintings is called “YOU UGLY.” Here’s a shot from a recent group show at Kavi Gupta here in Berlin:

Liebe Grüsse!!!
